October 2008 update

October 2008

The renewed team

I would like to acquaint you with my team. This spring two couples had their weddings. Now there are 5 blessed couples and 3 “on a waiting list” in our team. J 10 persons on team are full time coworkers and 3 are volunteers who are still seeking God’s will regarding further joining the team full time. Please, pray for our close walking with God and unity of thoughts with each other. (1Pet.3:8)

The time of sowing

Autumn is always the hot season for the evangelism. I challenge my disciples to be involved in this process in order to put into practice the principle from 2-Tim.2:2 “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.” Please, pray that God give me the right vision about who out of my actual disciples is able to also teach others, so that I invest my time into the “right people” «…because the days are evil.» (Еf.5:16)

«Feminarium»

We decided to organize the so called FEMINARIUM (the hen party J) in order to help the spiritually interested ladies get to know each other and also find biblical answers to their “women questions”. The first meeting was attended by 11 girls who never entered “our territory” before. J Girls were not afraid to tell their opinions and there was an informal atmosphere. In the end everybody expressed the desire to know God more. That’s why already the next week we started the weekly Bible study group. Gratitude to Father for His work in hearts!!!

Alina

I am glad about the changes in the life of Alina, the girl I mentioned in my previous letters. Not long ago she was in big trouble. She called me herself and asked for a meeting because she realized that she is distancing herself away from God. After the discussion she started to solve her issues based on Bible principles. Praise Father for her recovery! Now Alina is trying to share her faith although it does not come easy to her.

Personal need and gratitude

Please, pray for my father: for the recovery after the operation. Because of his leg he hardly moves even with the help of crutches.

This year I was able to finally take part at the harvesting of corn and grapes at my parent’s village – first time in the last 15 years. These are inexpressible feelings of physical weariness and… happiness!!!

A quote I heard

When you address God in an intercession (prayer) you concentrate on petitions.

Thanking God you concentrate on blessings.

Praising God you concentrate on Him.

Thank you very much for your prayers and the open heart for the ministry together with me.

I wish that you be in the centre of worshiping God in the place where He put you!

June-July 2008 update

Victory beyond competitions.

Friends, as I promised you this newsletter will be about the “SonRise” projects which were happening this summer. Thank you very much for you prayers: God was attracting new people to Him and was changing their lives.

For those of you who do not understand English: SonRise means the Rise of the Son (the overall goal is to exalt the Son of God among people attracted by sport)

«SonRise» - Moldova (June, 15 - 30)

Project was happening in two districts of Chisinau. The vision was “To stand in the gap for our district united with the churches from the city in the SonRise project”. Two teams (consisting of our coworkers, spiritual disciples and members of different churches + basketball players from USA) committed themselves to involve children and youth from the city to various sports games (soccer, volleyball, basketball) and at the same time to share with them the Good News about Jesus Christ. Soccer was especially popular: there were about 40 fellows involved in it in one single district!

In the very first evening in the field God provided an opportunity to talk to a woman who was walking with her child around the place where we played volleyball with those who wanted. This example as well as discussions with sportsmen and amateurs that followed confirmed the truth that people are quite open towards the Gospel, but there is a need for someone to come up and plant in this life or even to harvest a fruit for eternal life. Thus, in the last day of the project during final competitions one girl was sitting in front of me in the sports hall. She came to support her boyfriend – volleyball player. I immediately thought that she probably did not hear the Gospel clearly yet, but it took me two more hours to approach her and get acquainted. Her consent turned into a very qualitative conversation about her relations with God and Inga told that when she will be alone she will turn herself to God.

May God continue to attract and give growth to those who heard about Him during this project.

«SonRise» - Netherlands (July, 1-15)

It appeared to be that Holland is not just the country of tulips, wind mills, clogs and bicycles, but also the motherland of SonRise project. There were 62 churches involved in the project this year. It already became some kind of tradition for a youth group from Athletes in Action to visit Holland each summer in order to learn by doing how to better run this project locally. For me this trip was a real gift of God! All Moldavians were distributed to different teams in different towns. I, together with one newly converted member of our movement got to the town called Enschede . Our team consisted of 10 members aged 17 to 35.

In spite of this the Spirit of God was “dazzling” ourselves so hard during this short time that we even broke in tears during partying. I think that people were recognizing Jesus in ourselves because we had love among us. We prayed a lot and immediately when seeing the need. I also noticed that the people from the church that partnered with us in this project also prayed in the same natural way. The people from the church of a more advanced age ( holding high positions at their jobs) were closely cooperating with us and serving us (preparing food, offering shelter) – the true example of humbleness and generosity.

The weather was very changeable: the heat of the sun was quickly changed by a pouring rain and the amazing thing about it is that it mainly happened when we had a brake in sports. And then everybody would hide in a big tent in order to continue the program: we would show a small performance every day there and then one of us would tell a personal testimony of turning to Jesus.

The language barrier was impeding me from freely sharing the Gospel with the participants of the project. It was usually possible to talk to the people of a more advanced age who spoke English. But our God is good and merciful and He made a bigger thing – He brought to the field a Turkish woman, who was taking her 3 children back home. We became friends with her very fast and in the last evening I was speaking her for a long time about the forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus Christ. We even prayed together, it is just that she prayed in the way she was used to before - “Muslim like”. Please, pray that God continue to work in the heart of this woman and everyone who was involved in this project. May the children who filled in the forms would faithfully attend the Bible study hours in the church. May God give wisdom to my friends Jan Jab, Cornei and others in leading these groups.

In my next newsletter I will tell you about one more project that was happening in July in Moldova in Balti town. It was really a very interesting and productive summer!

Please, pray for our relationships in the new team, for an effective year in the ministry, reaching as many sportsmen for Christ as possible.

I will not cease to thank you for your constancy in spiritual partnership.

Shooting together with you in the same gates,

Veronica.

August 2008 update

Summer project «By the footprints of Jesus» Balti town, 22-29th of August 2008

Goals:

- to teach the disciples share the Gospel in natural circumstances;

- to help youth of the local church “Emmanuel” get enthusiastic about fulfilling of the Great Commission.

Pastor of “Emmanuel” church led us in the Word, discovering the truths about what it means to be real disciple of Christ and what the cost of the discipleship is.

Matth.4:19 The local parks were the perfect place for applying of this principle.

Even a heavy rain could not interrupt the already started conversation with this couple. They themselves proposed to enter under the shelter of the local House of culture nearby. So said so done! Costea and Janna were surprised about our meeting even more than we. «These days young ladies being interested in religious matters?! Girls, you are doing just great!!!» We had to meet them the next day as well …. J

The other evening I did not expect that my auditory will turn to be 8 “wild” teenagers…J

What did God do?

In 6 days there were 182 people who heard about forgiveness and eternal life in Christ during private conversations and there were 30 of them who entrusted their lives to Jesus in an open prayer.

The general meetings were held in the building of the church which is under construction for 10 years already.

As you see, we had one more important mission…

This is what the participants of the project say….

«I took the decision to freely go and share the Gospel in future. I realized that there is nothing impossible and if you really want something, then you just need to believe…It is hard to describe how I liked being part of this project. I learned a lot of new and interesting things. My goal for the future is to follow the footprints of Jesus.» I was living together with Varea in a room at a family from the church. We became very good friends during this time. She still studies at a lyceum. She received Christ this year. Her father, orthodox priest, does not know yet about the “revolution” that happened in the life of his daughter.

«I liked very much to be next to the „New Life” together spreading the Good News even in a rainy weather. I truly felt God’s hand in the lives of people.I also liked that you are optimists and always ready to come for help. May God’s blessings pour over you in abundance».

Inna – the girl from the „Emmanuel” church, we partnered with.

Please, pray for the following work with those who responded to voice of the Holy Spirit. May these people join the living church and grow spiritually.

Shooting together with you in the same gates,

Veronica.

June 2008 prayer letter

June 2008

Hot summer season has started. Students entered last stage of the session. In this period there are especially many prayers being raised to heavens, including from those, who think that they are on a different way about God.

The story is going on

In my last letter I wrote about Alina, who is now doing her first steps in spiritual growth. A week ago I visited their dormitory in order to lead an ordinary study. As soon as the study was over Olesea, the correspondent student entered the room as she temporary settled in their room. The question – what are you doing here? was answered by Alina, - she told that we were studying Bible. And then I asked Olesea about her attitude towards God.

- I do not want to speak about this! - said she impatiently.

We switched to watching video clip where the well-known sportswomen were speaking about their faith in the Living God and I asked Olesea if she thought she was a good person. I proposed her to check herself according to some of the commandments and a hot discussion flared up. The girl, who a bit earlier seemed to be indifferent, was retelling various stories with spiritual implication that she recently heard from her friend. She was eagerly swallowing answers to her questions. It was obvious that God has prepared her and the time arrived. Having told her about the escape that we have through the sacrifice of Jesus I started to hurry up as it became too late and the public transport was hard to find at that time in our country.

Text Box: Аlinа and Olesya are studying the Bible in parkTwo days later I met the girls again. As it turned out they were talking for a long time after I left. Alina went to the exam unprepared, but she was released from it due to hard work during the year. She was definitely in a pleasant shock after hearing this! And Olesea decided to trust her life to God! In that same day she was close to being raped but she prayed to God and He changed the circumstances. Olesea proved God’s almightiness in action and has no doubt about Him now. She also joined Alina in studying Bible. Please, pray for Olesea as she has big problems with studies and that her fear for entering church disappears. Pray for their spiritual growth.

«Over time - cafe»

We organized watching of the Champion’s League for the professional football players at the big screen in a comfortable “Over time café” arranged by us. Before the game starts we usually present an interesting program that allows us to build trusting relationships with them and bring forward the spiritual challenge. Champion’s League is a good bridge for a follow up meeting with each of them individually for telling about the forgiveness in Christ. The most impressive for me was not even the fact that there were 35 people coming to the meeting, but that the quiz was led by the sportsman- disciple from our movement who himself a year ago at the similar meeting was sitting in the hall and answering most of the questions. And now God so changed the life of Serghei, that he is now witnessing to others and takes serious responsible tasks upon him.

Gratitude:

1. For the interview that was taken from the new dean of the pedagogical faculty.

2. For the 16 students/sportsmen who trusted their lives to God in this semester.

3. For the new coworkers in the team.

Prayer:

1. Accommodation issue. Where to move?

2. Sports project “Sun Rise” from the 15th to 30th of June. Our vision: to stay in the gap for our district united with the churches of our town in the project “Sun Rise”.

3. Trip to Netherlands from the 1st to 15th of July for the similar project “Sun Rise”.

4. 22-30 July – summer project in Balti (North of Moldova); for preparing of the main lessons, finances for organization.

Summer – is a busy period, this is why prayer needs are so many. J Thank you for being ready to support. Thank you for your self-sacrificingness and consistency.

Shooting together with you in the same gates,

Veronica.

May 2008 update

Мay 2008 Text Box: Valea, Misha, SvetaGod once again makes it happen! There appeared the opportunity to go on a trip through the beauty spots of Moldova together with students from the Sports University. One of the two girls who joined me on that trip (her name is Valea) already in the bus started to tell a guy – swimmer about Athletes in Action and a bit later about Christ. Although Misha was quite independent in his reasoning, it was noticeable that as we spoke to him he slowly started to agree with what we were telling him and in a certain moment he told: I feel that I will soon also be telling others about what I hear now from you. God grant! May Father give Misha an open mind for His truth.

In the day of excursion we managed to strengthen our friendship with several students whom I shared the Gospel earlier. Please, pray that they could get to “Exodus” (a 3 day camping outing) from 8th to 11th of May. Such trips sometimes have a bigger impact than one year of work.

Text Box: Oxana and AlinaAlina will turn 21 in a month. She has been swimming from the age of 7. During her sport activity she managed to take the 1st place in the National championship of Moldova for 4 times. This year she also managed to take the first place for four times in Luxemburg. There have been many victories in a short life of Alina, but the most important victory has happened a couple of weeks ago, when she finally decided to open her heart for Jesus. A spontaneous discussion in the dormitory turned into cries of exultation together with angels, who for sure filled that room J (a pity that we could not see them!) Now Alina passes studies for the new converts. And she gets help in this process from her friend Oxana (gymnast), who believed 1.5 years ago. In this way we fulfill the process «м2М»: from ministry to movement, when we pass the race to our disciples, who are able to teach others. (2Тiм.2:2) Praise God for He saves the swimmers and gives growth to disciples!

On the threshold of Easter there happened a unique evening: participants of our movement, professionals and just students-sportsmen were discussing together the events from the Old Testament connected to establishment of Easter celebration. This meeting represented a mini model of what we dream to see in our ministry: a united spiritual movement of influential people from the world of sports. It comes difficult to move in this direction if we do not have points of interaction with these people. This is why I am very interested in attempting to get official hours for teaching in sports University. May God accompany me in application for this!

Also, please, pray for the meeting with the wife of the chancellor (the dean of the faculty of wrestling) to take place and for the natural approach to her with the goal to share the Gospel.

Shooting together with you in the same gates,

Veronica.

March-April world 2008

Hello friends,

Greetings in the Lord! We hope that you enjoyed a special Easter celebration and took extra time to consider the awesome reality of Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. The reality of the Easter story is a big part of what we communicate to students every day. I pray that I never tire of telling that “old story”.

Telling “movement stories”

One of the purposes of this newsletter is to share some stories of what God is doing to build student movements around our area. It always thrills my heart to hear how God is moving in different parts of the world. I know that what He is doing in another country may not be what He is doing in my country – but it is still worthy of praise and rejoicing. As we hear these stories – let’s take time to thank God for what He has done there and what He WILL do, even among each of us.

Albania

From March 22-29, the Albania Campus Ministry sent four different teams of staff and students on mission projects to reach out to Muslim peoples outside Albania with the gospel. For the first time, they sent a group to Bosnia, where the team helped to follow-up contacts from an outreach there. There were also two teams sent to Macedonia; one to Skopja and one to Tetovo. The fourth team went to Ankara, Turkey.

What is especially encouraging is that more people applied (70 students) than they had places for. Altogether 35 students and 10 staff ended up going. Through these projects, students and staff were able to build friendships with students from Muslim backgrounds, as well as share the gospel with many of them.

After the project was over in Bosnia, a group of young men wanted to continue to meet with the American STINTers serving there, to learn more about the Christian faith.

It is exciting to see God answering the prayers of the Albanian leadership to see students with a growing vision for the nations of the world, saying “Here am I, send me!”

Another interesting piece of information coming from Nikolin Dodaj (the new Albania NCD and the current Tirana CD) is that the statistics this year have shown that about 10% of students who hear the gospel from staff are indicating decisions for Christ, while over 33% of those who are hearing the gospel from fellow students are indicating decisions to receive Christ! This is very powerful for Albania as they seek to have "student-led" movements.

Russia

In Yekaterinburg, the pairing of students who were envisioned and equipped as leaders of spiritual movements and the implementation of an effective broad-based sowing strategy has been very successful. Students coming off of the Black Sea summer project had the vision and motivation to share their faith and a tool (Student Survival Kits) that made it very easy. As a result of this strategy, 33 students in Yekaterinburg trusted Christ last semester.

The excitement is that students are playing a role in every part of the process. Students are leading a prayer movement and they have been a huge part of distributing Student Survival Kits. Students have called back contacts and met with them and have seen fellow students trust Christ. Students are now discipling these new student believers.

Bosnia and Croatia

Bosnia and Croatia are both at the beginning stages of movement building. They are trying some very interesting strategies to connect with students – and are beginning to see their prayer and faith begin to result in some identifiable fruitfulness. Here’s a report from one of their most recent outreaches…

Porn Nation - the Naked Truth is a multimedia-based presentation that tells the stories of several people’s lives in a compelling way. Michael Leahy, speaker, author and former sex addict, shares his story of addiction, healing and encounter with God.

The staff in Croatia/Bosnia saw the Lord do some amazing things during their Porn Nation outreach week, March 10-14 with venues in 4 cities—Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Sarajevo. This was the largest student outreach they have ever held in terms of having students attend an event and hear the Gospel. Here is a brief overview of what happened that week:

March 10—Sarajevo

At 7:20 PM, the campus team nervously stood at the door wondering if anyone would come… what would happen? At 7:30 PM, students began showing up in groups of 5 and 10 until all 280 seats were filled. Amazingly 180 students stayed after a 4-minute break, even though the speaker said he would talk about spiritual issues afterwards. Also amazing is that there are 90 students to follow-up and 90% of them are Muslims!

March 12—Zagreb

At 4:20 PM, the students again began to wonder if anyone would come. And once again, students began to troop in. Over 250 students showed and 50 requested some type of follow-up.

March 13—Rijeka

In Rijeka over 400 students showed up to fill a 340-seat theatre. After the lecture, a student named Petra patiently waited to personally talk with Michael. When it was her turn, she said, “You have really touched my heart tonight. How can I know God personally?” Michael sat down with her, verbally shared the Four Laws and asked her if she wanted to pray to receive Jesus. She said, “yes, definitely.” Michael introduced her to Brooke Butler and he explained a bit more about how to grow and gave her a Svakistudent Pita booklet. As she left, she was beaming. One of our staff women, also named Petra, will be following her up.

March 14—Split

In Split, which has been a notoriously difficult place to minister, 200 students came to the meeting on a Friday night which was at the exact same time as a huge celebration held by the city on the Riva, for Blanka Vlasic, the Croatian high jumper who had just won the gold medal at the world indoor track and field championships.

In all 1145 students attended the talks, 925 stayed until the end (a break was given to allow students to leave before the spiritual presentation) and 279 requested some type of follow-up (more info, spiritual conversation, article).

A final thought…

A Cat Heaven

One day a cat dies of natural causes and goes to Heaven. There he meets the Lord himself. The Lord says to the cat, "You lived a good life and if there is any way I can make your stay in Heaven more comfortable, please let Me know."

The cat thinks for a moment and says, "Lord, all my life I have lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor." The Lord stops the cat and says, "Say no more," and a wonderful fluffy pillow appears.

A few days later six mice are killed in a tragic farming accident and go to Heaven. Again the Lord is there to greet them with the same offer. The mice answer, "All of our lives we have been chased. We have had to run from cats, dogs, and even women with brooms. Running, running, running; we're tired of running. Do you think we could have roller skates so we don't have to run anymore?" The Lord says, "Say no more," and fits each mouse with beautiful new roller skates.

About a week later the Lord stops by to see the cat and finds him in a deep sleep on the pillow. The Lord gently wakes the cat and asks him, "How are things since you arrived?" The

cat stretches and yawns and replies, "It is wonderful here. Better than I could have

ever expected. And those Meals on Wheels you've been sending by are theeeeeeee

best!!!"

My testimony

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. (Jer.33:3)

Have you ever roamed looking for an exit, but instead, stumbled into deadly closed doors?

This was my condition before I knew God. Quite early I started to ask myself: what I was living for and how to change my character? Parents, friends, psychological techniques and even the oriental teachings I tried did not help me. Having climbed to a certain “moral height”, I would roll downhill shortly after that in a gust of anger, discouragement and grief. I was suffering from anger attacks, hate towards myself and people around me. I became absorbed by in reading and hoped to find an answer to what could make me strong and correct.

And indeed, I came across some literature that described the all-powerful God who would accept everyone without any conditions. In these books I read an example of prayer for forgiveness of sins to become the person God wants me to be. I had an immediate feeling that this was an answer for me! With all my heart I asked God to forgive me and to change me as He wanted because I knew it was beyond my own ability.

It was like turning on a lamp inside me – and my life filled with light. I became attracted to fellowship with other people, especially those who are also sincere in their longing for God. But it was after quite a long time before I met such people. Finally during the second year in University I met a teacher, who could speak about his faith in God and based his thoughts on the words in the Bible as well as in scientific arguments.

Discussions with this man as well as active Bible reading helped me to draw the final line under my hopeless past. My thoughts became more organized; I became more self-controlled and discovered a new love for people. I realized that the essence of life consists in knowing God. Instead of judging people I am trying to understand them and to believe the best instead of having a negative attitude. I noticed that life is so wonderful when you live it trusting God. I can rejoice over each event that happens in my life and I am thankful for all that I have.

Being a student I was participating on conferences organized by CCC Moldova. Usually evangelism presented as a practical part of the conference: meeting new people in dormitories or parks. My first evangelism experience was positive and I thought that there is nothing more beautiful and important then giving people hope and that what I want to do in my life.

Therefore after graduation from the University I felt the call to join the ministry with New Life Moldova, where I have served for 9 years already. Most of this time, I was involved in the student ministry in different towns of Moldova. In 2003 I helped to start a new ministry with a team from the Ukraine and spent 3 years in Voronezh, Russia. Now I have been back in Moldova for 3 years and have joined the “Athletes in Action” ministry. It is a new target group but the main goal is still to bring the Gospel to these athletes.

In the King James version of Daniel 11:32 it is written that «The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits» I invite you to join with me as we do exploits for God’s glory in Eastern Europe.
